From the boarding house to the boardroom

A conversation with New Zealand’s first Consumer Advisors 1990

This interview took place late in 1990, several months after the Central District Manager of the Auckland Area Health Board funded  the employment of two half time consumer advisors, through Psychiatrict Survivors – a central Auckland peer support and advocacy organisation.

The consumer advisors were employed and supervised by Psychiatric Survivors and provided advice and advocacy on behalf of consumers in central Auckland to the Area Health Board.

They were the first consumers in New Zealand to be employed or funded by the statutory mental health services to provide advice or advocacy to management.
